Toilet and sink repair

Understanding How Does a Toilet Work

While the toilet, as we know it today, was perfected a couple of centuries ago, most of its basic elements remain the same today. All toilets, including even the most advanced models, have three key parts: the tank (cistern), the receiving bowl, and a special siphon tube.

The tank, sometimes known as a cistern, is the large receptacle that holds fresh water for when the flush is activated. Most common toilets have the tank towards the back of the unit, and hold approximately two gallons. Most toilet tanks have a float and a stopper to help regulate the right amount of water to add to the tank after the flushing mechanism has been activated.

When you flush your toilet, the handle moves a chain or arm, which in turn lifts up the stopper at the bottom of the toilet tank. The clean water in the tank then travels down a pipe into the receiving bowl, cleaning and refilling the bowl.

Once the tank has been emptied, the stopper is replaced, and a refill tube activates to add fresh water to the tank. When the float reaches the proper height, the refill tube is closed to prevent the tank from overflowing.

The siphon tube attaches to the receiving bowl, and is designed with a special curved shape so that the bowl will only be drained of water when it reaches a specified height. When new water is added to the receiving bowl, such as after the flushing mechanism has been activated, the siphon tube opens the receiving pipe and conducts the water from the bowl down and through the pipes.

If any of these mechanisms becomes jammed, broken, or otherwise damaged, it can cause your toilet to malfunction. A blockage in the siphon tube, a malfunction of the float, or the flushing handle becoming disconnected from the stopper arm can cause a toilet to no longer function properly.
